There is a need for specially-trained psychologists to work in primary care settings in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with medical co-morbidities. This Expertise training workshop will identify the most prevalent psychosocial risk factors in medical treatment outcomes, how to choose appropriate assessment instruments and best practice techniques for communicating with patients and healthcare teams. The information presented can help untangle the physical, emotional and social dynamics that are often intertwined in healthcare – and help psychologists target their services to those who are seeking assistance in these areas. This training will focus on chronic pain and other common chronic medical conditions encountered in primary care.
By attending this workshop, participants can:
- understand the psychosocial risk factors for medical treatment outcome
- gain knowledge of how to establish service goals and productive, ongoing communications with medical colleagues
- identify the most appropriate testing resources for medical patients
- learn how to target communication of test results to medical personnel, patients, and other mental health professionals to facilitate patient treatment and outcomes
