When a Child Rejects a Parent: How to Intervene Without Becoming Part of the Problem
Full-day workshop (6 CE hours) Saturday November 7, 2009 9 am to 4 pm, registration: 8:30 am
Triangulation within families in which a child sides with one parent against the other is a familiar phenomenon to clinicians. In divorced families this dynamic is often expressed as visitation resistance or refusal and even as outright rejection of a parent by the child. It has also been called parental alienation. Therapists who work with children, adults, couples or families frequently hear about various sides of this issue, and may find it difficult to assess the problem and choose the most effective ways in which to be helpful. Drawing upon various psychological theories the presenters will discuss the reasons why a child rejects a parent and the latest approaches to assessing and conceptualizing the problem and to intervening in the family in order to restore improved parent/child relationships and family functioning.
